Tree Finial

I had a few people over this weekend and my tree attracted a fair bit of attraction, particularly its topper.

No star or angel for me, I have a finial on my tree.  Based on the architectural look of a spire on European churches, it is a different look but one that is very familiar for me - it is what we always had on our family Christmas tree.  It took a lot of searching to find one, although they seem to be becoming more and more popular.

For me it is normal but my friends think it looks somewhat a spaceship!  What do you think?  And what tops your tree?

  2. I've never seen one before! But I rather like it - can't see the spaceship angle myself :P We had a traditional angel growing up, which got more and more worn over the years, but it was the traditional topper and it remains to this day. With my small tree and small Christmas ornament collection (although you are inspiring me to think of upsizing) I have a star.

  3. We have a star. It is quite a blingy star and the kids love it.

    Your tree looks lovely.

  4. Aneets - thank you, I think I would go a star if I hadn't found my finial.

Kari - the spaceship alludes me too! Our family finial was incredibly old and delicate, it was always Dad's job to put it on the tree, till eventually it was too old to use and we had to get another. I love the tradition of the old familiar decorations.

A Farmer's Wife - thank you. I do like a blingy star, although I often wonder if they are hard to keep on straight. It takes ages to get the finial pointing in the right direction.

  5. Love it! Oh man, I'll have to put a photo of my family's annual Christmas tree on my blog. When it goes up probably one minute before midnight on Christmas Eve. Sadly, I don't expect to have one in my place, considering I've now been living without furniture for almost two months...

  6. Hannah - yes do post a picture, I love seeing people's trees. You could always do what I did for the office last year, I got a crystal christmas tree. Remember as a kid you would get those "crystal gardens" where you added water and the minerals in the paper grew out? Well I got a tree like that! It was awesome. I think I got it from Socrates in the Canberra Centre.

  7. I just found you blog and I love it. Such a great concept! I am such a sucker for Christmas trees, but I am ashamed to say we don't always have an official topper. We're usually too short in my house to reach the top of the tree, so we just put ornaments near the top. ;)

  8. Beautiful! We usually have a star. I'm yet to get one this year but I cannot wait until we do. It smells glorious. Happy times :)

  9. Kelly - thank you so much! My parents have a massive tree that requires a ladder to do the top, so I understand the effort involved. I couldn't believe how much easier it was to do when I had my tree for the first year where I can reach it all (but I am tall).

Heidi - I have to admit, I go the fake route. I love the smell of a real tree but I can't cope with the dropped needles and other mess.
